The Future is a terrible future that you can not change. "There are no words" tells the story of a young mute girl who is in a voice But decades back. With the knowledge of a train wreck that you want to kill his grandfather's friends, is Jaxon MacKenzie said in a time before the accident. Feathered Quill: 5 stars
Are there any words, by Jaxon, a girl 12 years said to autism, who lives with his grandparents. Although it shares with the reader that she can not speak, and to describe their reactions his intense and touching, this is not really a book about autism. It's an adventure, whose protagonist happens to be autistic.
Jaxon is proving to be a solid, quick-thinking girl be with an eye on a boy wearing a black friend in 1918, pants and shoes happy boy under his clothes. Author Marie Calhoun Brown defies many stereotypes. Teacher and parents looking for a book with strong female characters, or sweet, nurturing men can be found here. The book also raises awareness of autism this without a problem to overcome. In fact, the main problem Jaxon of view is that people do not understand others, autism and treat it as if it is stupid or his word, to use unworthy.
We see the world through the eyes of someone who is extremely sensitive to touch and sound. Jaxon also pays attention to details and colors. Descriptions the world around them, the feeling of carpet, the sounds of rain are quiet and poetic. Jaxon, communicate to the great difficulties with others, including a his own mother is still able to paint beautiful pictures for us the world as he sees it.
When Jaxon will be magically transported through a painting and back in time, she finds she is able to speak. In fact, there seems to be no communication problems whatsoever and are exceptionally good intuition feelings of others. In Tennessee, in 1918, autism Jaxon is not a problem, but they soon discovered that racism, a problem they were not aware of their adventure, before the time travel is enormous.
There are no words is a quick read with great characters nice. The relationships between the characters are very sweet while the real. The reader is left with patience and kindness of grandparents Jaxon inspire their allies.
Quill wrote: A dream of adventure that reads like poetry as, while challenging stereotypes

Griffin, Paul. The houses of Orange. Penguin / books Dian. 2009th
From Booklist:
* Favorites * Review Sprang as Rita Williams-Garcia (2009), this story follows three children through the pressure cooker of life of urban teens, as it moves to its conclusion overwhelming. Although the book of minor humiliations and the vortex exaggerated dramas removed during a single school day, It has a much more diffuse. The three characters not to be more different Tamika Sykes is a partially deaf student anxious to know if she really wants to hear the noise around them; Hope Fatima is a refugee 16 who have fled violence and poverty in the African countries not specified in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty to live, and depending on who you ask, Jimmy ring, which is already troubled by a veteran of 18 years, a poet or a junkie on the street. The form three an unusual friendship unites both artistically and emotionally. All of this is spent in a city that has for a powder keg of anti-immigrant sentiment (Thanks to a just right as citizens of rewards for reporting illegal immigrants) and is dangerously close to the pervasive violence of the band spark. Griffin knows, the young, especially the way they talk. In the hands of another writer, he could have turned this story of three strangers in a mess Sentimental, but not the depth of emotions honestly, as his alienation battle characters and find the strength in sacrifice. Although readers will be prepared a depressing journey of the first scene, they are still a few turns in this fast-paced, taut and powerful story book. Classes 10-12. Ian Chipman

From Booklist:
* Starred Review * Shortly after the death of their mother, 15 years, Ben and his two younger brothers are stunned when his father sold his house, buying a sailboat, and have announced that they live aboard and cruise in the Bahamas for the next year. Crack, he knows everything and forced his stepfather master to obey orders, Ben begins angry and can not find a way out. As he says, "We were always together." When his father gives guidance for Bermuda and disappears one night on board to ask the boys not much time if he or she jumps down before fighting for stay afloat in the wild Atlantic storm. Lost at sea in a ship damaged a door to find the island, where they met with little food, little water, are blocked, and little hope of salvation. Herlong first book is a great story of survival and a beautiful representation of family relationships in a crisis. Rightly angry, but logical thinking, and sometimes compassionate, Ben is a sympathetic protagonist, and his brothers are no less interesting. With sufficient detail to real situations and a minimum of metaphor, is the first person narrative proper and direct. The Page Turner is an adventure story and a convincing, compelling story and finally moving. Grades 6-10. Carolyn Phelan

Napoli, Donna Jo. Alligator Bayou. Random House / button. 2009
From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up-Based their extensive research, after reading a newspaper article on the lynching of Sicilian grocery Tallulah, Los Angeles, in 1899, made, this Napoli a moving story and sobering about an aspect of American immigration, probably unknown to most readers. After the death of his mother left her 14-year-old Calogero Home occupied Sicily to sleepy town in the South to help his uncle and his young cousin grocery run. White serves customers expect from blacks and will make their displeasure clear whether the Sicilians are not angry. Striped white school and did not know they are going to the black school, learned English from a tutor Calogero, who has also tried to help him understand the behavior of South America. Cousins meet with African American boys, they take a frightening hunt crocodile, who sealed their friendship. Calogero is Patricia, has attracted one of the girls Afro-American, but can not understand the danger behind her fear, seen in public with him. Although stories of his uncles of the recent lynching of Sicilians New Orleans has heard, he is not prepared for the terrible tragedy struck his family when the uncle of a white doctor Local Francesco kills goats, then convinced a mob, the Sicilians of violence cons-attack plan. Historical events are easily integrated with vivid details of everyday life, strong characterizations and authentic dialogue that sounds good. Finally, the author broadened their concerns beyond the specifics of the story, encouraging readers to reconsider the logic of this disaster and other manifestations of racism .- Gustin Ginny, Library System of Sonoma County, Santa Rosa, CA
