Question: Churches should do everything possible to assist Haiti in this disaster? Yes and Yes (two examples, and more) by Peter Menkin

Peter Menkin

This writer was in conversation with a friend informed the San Francisco Bay Area, and the surprising question: Does the church is not for Haiti, make a donation or how to help the disaster?

How shocking. Of course, the churches of various denominations donate several important types of money, assistance, direct assistance, but also in action for a major economic issues. Although my friend and this writer no time or other common interests to further analysis, this article is an attempt to ensure that Haiti has helped two possibilities by churches.

Needless to say, my friend Ignorance shocked occurred to me that others can not realize that so many Christians seeking to experience a large extent, the needy and life to help a natural disaster. Haiti is a major focus of this type of activity and concern. Organized religion is and has responded.

The Presbyterian Church USA has a hospital in Haiti and it is only recently that the name was announced: "Sainte-Croix (Holy Cross Hospital) and one on the site was nursing Leogane, Haiti approved, are, to a grant of 200,000 dollars in aid to victims of Louisville-based Presbyterian received (PDA). "

To work in a certain way all faiths. The grant application was sent to the PDA, and funds have been approved within two hours. The hospital and nursing departments are Episcopal Diocese of Haiti and has been an major Presbyterian Church (USA) mission in Haiti. Leogane is near the epicenter of the earthquake on January 12 and Both facilities suffered heavy damage.

Here is an excerpt from the Presbyterian

"We have been our partners in Haiti Episcopal said that, despite the damage, the nursing school operating as a makeshift hospital has started half an hour after the earthquake, "said Randy Ackley, coordinator PDA." In addition, nursing students first 10 stations care is around the main part of Leogane established. People on the ground working hard to help others and is a way to give us support their rescue efforts. "

News media have reported that up to 90 percent of buildings in the main part Léogane, 80 destroyed. This grant will support the PDA distribution of electrical energy required and water and sanitation, fuel for generators and vehicles, and salaries for local staff involved in cleaning.

This is specific, current practice in the field and help to the stage to say a lot of work and coordination and includes a large amount of silver.

Donations from congregations and members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) of the reaction to the earthquake in Haiti over $ 2.7 million by January 29, after ELCA Treasurer Christina Jackson-Skelton. Nearly 16,000 individual donations have been sent to the ELCA, "she said.

Politico-economic issues are raised by the churches and the World Council of Churches (WCC) recently demand with its many voices of the church for cancellation of debt, Foreign Haiti. They say:

An immediate and total "Withdrawal" of Haiti's external debt was "a first step, the countries hit by quake land requires a comprehensive plan to support the recovery, poverty eradication and sustainable development. "

In fact, in the context of the statement of January, General Secretary Rev. Olav Tveit Fykse the international community has asked to cancel the external debt of Haiti.

The release of the WCC is a real attitude of the economic reforms of this type of assistance in a concerted effort by its members act on the world stage resolution:

In addition to debt and term emergency needs in Haiti short-"Reconstruction and sustainable development in Central Europe and long term. "But," any financial assistance should take the form of grants, not loans that burden the country with more debt "says the WCC statement.

Haiti, he was the poorest country in the hemisphere Western is also a heavily indebted. Despite some $ 1200000000 external debt off in June last year by a written statement international financial institutions that the country needs 641 million U.S. dollars to multilateral banks and countries. This year, Haiti had to pay part

10 million dollars to the International Monetary Fund.

As a caption to the image of a woman feeding a child in this story, the WCC provides a strong statement: "A commitment to Haiti debt the cost of health care, education and other important social programs, is illegitimate. "The photo is by Paul Jeffrey ACT /.

The Ecumenical Ecumenical Council of Churches is a community seeks unity, common witness of Christians and services. The WCC brings together 349 churches, denominations and fellowships church in over 110 countries and territories around the world, more than 560 million Christians and the majority of Orthodox churches in the world, many Anglicans, Baptists, Lutherans, Methodists and Reformed churches, as well as many united and independent churches. During most of the founding churches WCC were European and North America, today, most are members of churches in Africa, Asia, Caribbean, Latin America, the Middle East and the Pacific.

As a note end, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has reported that the people Haitian "hope of life," said Louis Dorvilier, a staff member churchwide of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ALL). He said that despite the many difficulties
The survivors of the earthquake of 12th January, Haitians live worship song heard in shelters and are – as witness accounts of other members of ELCA in Haiti in the days following the disaster.
